FAQs for the Green Zone USB Flash Drive

Q: Is this a copy of the Tor browser software on a usb stick?
A: No. The Tor Browser Bundle is easy to use, but it does not secure the desktop where it runs. The TAILS, Privatix and Liberté Linux distros on the Green Zone flash drive provide hardened desktop environments for extra security.

Q: How fast is the Tor network?
A: The Tor Network is generally acceptable for normal browsing if you have a fast computer and broadband Internet connection. You will encounter slow performance with low end, commodity/slow computers and with large downloads, such as videos and torrent.

Q: How well does Green Zone perform on a system four or five years old?
A: If the computer only has USB 2.0 ports, then the boot time for the distros is extended. The Tor network uses encryption algorithms heavily and therefore its performance depends partially on the speed of the CPU doing the encryption. We find the performance of TAILS, Privatix and Liberté distros to be acceptable on most older hardware. However, low-end, netbook type systems sometimes fail to provide reasonable service. Of course, you only need Green Zone for anonymous activity. You can always reboot for everything else.
